PLETT ART RESIDENCY has been running since 2021 when Daron Chatz and his team picked up the reigns for Land Art in Plettenberg Bay, after Site_Specific held their Land Art Biennale here in 2011 and 2013.

Plett Arts Residency is currently running our annual Land Art event alongside the Plett Arts Festival. This year’s event will be our sixth one.

Land Art is a powerful instrument that connects people to each other and to nature and it has been an incredible journey to be able to witness this magic taking place here year after year.

Our mission is to facilitate space to listen and connect. To inspire deep listening and collaboration with nature. Our vision includes finding ways to positively impact pressing social-economic issues with our land art projects, and to include indigenous knowledge, practice, perspective, and wisdom in our land art projects. We seek to collaborate, cross-pollinate, and co-learn. We invite philosophers, poets, artists, conservationists, botanists, photographers, film makers, and elders alike to get in touch as partners and collaborators for our future projects and events.

One of our priorities is community inclusion. We already facilitate free workshops with various community members including adults and children. In future we plan to offer a structured mentorship program, supporting our youth, inspiring them and helping to develop their skills, understanding and creative practice in land art and multidisciplinary art practices. Artists are invited to contribute to our community workshops.

Participating artists are asked to be present throughout the entire process. This year the event runs from 25 September to 4 October. Traditionally we split the event up into a beach and estuaries segment and an inland segment which includes forests, dams, open fields and sometimes structures. The exact venues are released closer to the event.
