Heidi Hirsch
I’m Heidi Hirsch, a self-taught mixed media artist with German roots who is currently based in Stellenbosch, South Africa. I have a PhD in Natural Sciences which was awarded by the MartinLuther-Univeristy Halle, Germany. With a strong academic background in biology, specializing in population genetics, plant ecology, and invasion biology, I transitioned from academia to the art world to raise awareness about ecological issues through art.
My unique approach combines scientific rigor with artistic sensitivity, creating thought-provoking installations, sculptures, paintings, and mixed media pieces. My work often explores central themes of environmental degradation, ecological grief, and the intricate connections between humans and nature.
While my passion lies in working with clay, my artistic practice spans a diverse array of mediums, including watercolor, pastel, printmaking, collage, and installation. This versatility allows me to create art works that foster a deeper understanding of ecological issues and inspire meaningful conversations about conservation and sustainability.
