Richard John Forbes, Janet Botes & Jared Burchell
A spontaneous collaboration occured when Richard, Jared and Janet explored the Robberg side of the Beacon Isle hotel and beach. The men pushed a large stump found on the beach head over end until it could be balanced on a stone mostly submerged under sand. Blackening parts of it with a blow torch and colouring the cut sides with red dust obtained by grinding pieces of the soft red brick found at the foot of the hotel, the abstract part-tree, part-creature perched.
“A tenant of land art is to see the value in our surroundings this includes the the unseen spirit of the people we work with so the advent of this washed up log and the enthusiasm of our three hearts, hands and mind brought a new life to the space on Plettenberg bay beach.
Land art is also very much about space, light, and life and we three made alive , for a fleeting moment a new form in a beautiful place.”
